A WISH IN DIXIELAND

Take a swing back in time to 1920’s New Orleans, the birthplace of traditional Dixieland jazz. On Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 6:00 pm, the sights and sounds of N’awlins’ French Quarter will come alive at the Centurion Conference & Event Center for a fundraising event in support of the Children’s Wish Foundation. Enjoy a classic tasty Cajun dinner, listen to the vigorous & upbeat sounds of traditional Dixieland jazz, and learn one of the famous dances from the era.

 

Tickets can be purchased before March 1st for just $50, afterwards $55.

Being your evening with a glimpse of the streets of 1920s New Orleans at our registration desk where you’ll find out which of the famous New Orleans streets will host your dinner table. 

 

While you sip our signature Mint Julip Punch and sample our sumptuous hors d’oeuvres, watch members of the dance group SwingUO, from the University of Ottawa, demonstrate the famous dances of the era. 

 

Cruise on over to our silent auction tables for some fantastic items to bid on and take home at the end of the evening.

 

7:00 – 9:00 p.m.          Three Course Dinner with Entertainment

 

Move into the Empress Room and be transported to the famous streets of New Orleans.   Your host for the evening is local actor Barry Blake, a recipient of the Lorraine Ansell Award of Excellence for his distinguished contribution to Ottawa’s film and television community.

 

While you enjoy a three-course meal with Cajun flair, you’ll hear the sweet Dixieland sounds from our live band, the Swampwater Jazz Band.  Their motto:  "Swampwater, better for you than aspirin, red wine or broccoli."  And don’t forget to get your last minute bids in on the items in our silent auction.

 

Following dinner, take to the dance floor and try your hand at the famous dances of the era!

Barry Blake has been acting in the Canadian and international film and television industries for more than 30 years. With hundreds of roles to his credit, Barry is best remembered as the President in the long-running and highly successful Fido cellular advertising campaign. Fluently bilingual, Barry is well known for his work in numerous French language productions.

 

For the last 13 years, Barry has taught Acting for the Camera at the Canadian Screen Training Centre’s Summer Institute of Film and Television (SIFT) and Taking it to the Screen (T2S) Film and Television Training Workshops.

In 2006, Barry was named the first recipient of ACTRA Ottawa’s Award of Excellence (the Lorraine Ansell Award) for his distinguished contribution to Ottawa’s film and television community.

For over 30 years, the Swampwater Jazz Band has been playing traditional New Orleans Dixieland jazz with a freshness and enthusiasm that keeps toes tapping and the band in constant demand.

 

The Swampwater Jazz Band has only one objective: to make people happy through music. Its motto: “Swampwater, better for you than aspirin, red wine and broccoli”. The band performs at many charitable functions, but will happily play weddings, dances, corporate functions. barbecues - - wherever happy music is required.
